Solution: LF Jennings and Spray Teq selected Freedom Chemical’s Guardian-Deck, a system of fast set spray-applied coating to solve this problem.  The concrete substrate was prepped by using a 4000psi pressure washer to an approved CSP of 4. The concrete was then vacuumed & blown off to reveal a clean, dry and roughened surface profile, as per the specified requirements.  Freedom’s FT4280 Polyurethane wear-coat was applied on top of the polyurea for skid resistance and safety. This material is now resistant to chemicals, heat, UV rays and abrasions.  Due to the fast cure nature of the primer and polyurea, both applications were able to follow consecutively as the schedule permitted.  For example, Freedom Chemical’s Freedom Tuff 6160 is a two component 100% solids epoxy primer designed to treat new and existing concrete, masonry, and wood.  Freedom Chemical’s Freedom Tuff 4280 is a two-component hand-applied elastomeric polyurea wear coat used as a protective/waterproof coating for interior and exterior concrete, wood, and metal surfaces. It is fast-setting and curing, which allows for applications in temperatures below 40°F. Lastly, Freedom Chemical’s Freedom Tuff 2214 is a fast setting, rapid curing, two-component aromatic polyurea. It is used as a general-purpose protective coating that is flexible and withstands constant water immersion.

Challenge: The concrete roof of the parking structure needed to be waterproofed but would not be put into service for a period of approximately 2 years, leaving it exposed to robust construction traffic and weather conditions. Only a Polyurea could withstand the continual use as a lay-down area and exposed to the elements without catastrophic damage.
